Better Cotton signs roadmap to future-proof Uzbekistan programme

Better Cotton has today signed a strategic roadmap with leading authorities in Uzbekistan’s agricultural and textile sectors to accelerate the production of more sustainable cotton across the country and ensure the long-term prosperity of its Better Cotton Programme.

Formalised at a Better Cotton event in Tashkent, which welcomed representatives from government, civil society, and fashion supply chains, the roadmap has three core objectives:

+ Align a strategic partnership model and define management, finance and implementation responsibilities

+ Ensure effective cooperation with programme partners and stakeholders to promote sustainable cotton farming practices

+ Develop and implement a joint set of measures to eliminate barriers to scale

The agreement is with Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Agriculture and the Textile and Garment Industry Association (Uztekstilprom).

"This roadmap signals that there is much more to come from Better Cotton in Uzbekistan. Together with our partners, we can strengthen the foundations of the Uzbekistan programme and develop new solutions to ensure long-term success", said Katerina Gorbunova, Country Manager of the Better Cotton Uzbekistan Programme.

The roadmap will drive immense improvements to the Better Cotton Uzbekistan Programme by leveraging the network and resources of partners to streamline farmer enrolment, strengthen and expand field-level support, and increase investment opportunities through grants and government subsidies.

A priority will be to train the Ministry of Agriculture and Uztekstilprom to equip them with the knowledge and resources required to become Better Cotton Programme Partners and lead engagements with cotton farming communities.

Better Cotton will also work with its collaborators to strengthen assurance activities, reduce audit fatigue, improve the flow of assessment data, and engage supply chain actors to demonstrate the benefits of processing Physical Better Cotton.

Together, the organisations will help raise awareness of Uzbek cotton both nationally and internationally, and establish long-term sustainability goals for the Better Cotton Programme.

Better Cotton Initiative opens enrollment in the US with promising opportunities for producers

Producer enrollment for the US Program of the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) is open until May 15 for the 2026-2027 season. With over 2,600 members spanning the cotton supply chain and more than 11,000 users of its Better Cotton Platform (BCP) as of 2025, BCI’s standard is implemented in 15 countries and covers one fifth of global cotton production.

Cotton made in Africa® (CmiA) and CmiA Organic are two internationally recognised standards that aim to promote sustainable development in the African cotton sector south of the Sahara. To ensure the standards’ credibility among brands, retailers, and consumers, independent verifiers evaluate compliance on the ground. The verification results for 2025, now published in the Aggregated Verification & Implementation Report, were very strong: The verifiers awarded consistently very good remarks regarding management, people, prosperity, and the environment.

ALADIN paves the way for circular and demand-driven textile production in Europe

Textile production can be organized sustainably by utilizing short supply chains and preventing overproduction. This can already be achieved today by intelligently connecting and efficiently utilizing existing infrastructure. At the same time, production becomes circular when innovative technologies and materials are used that enable high-quality recycling. The ALADIN research project, launched in May 2026 and co-funded with five million euros under the EU Horizon Europe program, is creating the conditions for this.

Katharina Obergruber appointed to the Management Board of Sandler AG

The Supervisory Board of Sandler AG has appointed Katharina Obergruber to the company’s Management Board. Effective September 1, 2026, the Board will consist of Philipp Ebbinghaus (CEO), Dr. Ulrich Hornfeck (currently CCO, future COO), and Katharina Obergruber (CCO). Ence and ShareTex begin initial testing of the ATENEA innovation project to promote textile recycling in Spain

Ence and ShareTex are making progress on the Atenea R&D project, which aims to develop a complete value chain for textile recycling in Spain.
