ICAC to hold its 83rd plenary meeting in Mwanza, Tanzania

The International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) is pleased and grateful to accept an invitation from Tanzania to host the ICAC’s 83rd Plenary Meeting from November 17-20, 2025, at the Malaika Beach Resort in Mwanza.

The local Organizing Committee in Tanzania has chosen “Leveraging Sustainable Cotton and Textiles for Rural and Industrial Development” as the theme for the event.

The four-day conference will feature a variety of sessions covering all sectors of the cotton textile value chain, including:

+ Recent Advances in Cotton Genetics, Genomics, and Breeding,

+ How Technical Textile Innovation Can Improve Cotton’s Competitiveness,

+ How International Environmental Legislation Could Reshape the Cotton Textile Trade,

+ Developments in Traceability and Transparency,

+ Cotton Consumption and Fiber Market Competition, and much more.

The conference will also feature the World Café, a dynamic session that focuses on the views and ideas of attendees rather than the speakers on stage.

At the conclusion of the 83rd Plenary Meeting, attendees will have the option to participate in a technical tour to gain deeper insighst into Tanzania’s cotton and textile industries.

More information will be forthcoming as the agenda takes shape and details about the Technical Tour are confirmed.

The Lenzing Group has successfully commissioned a new power‑to‑heat (P2H) facility with an electrical capacity of 14 megawatts. New study shows low environmental impact by Cotton made in Africa Organic Cotton from Tanzania

Today, the Aid by Trade Foundation (AbTF) is announcing the results of a comprehensive life-cycle analysis (LCA) for cotton produced in Tanzania under the Cotton made in Africa Organic (CmiA Organic) standard. The study emphasises the small ecological footprint of CmiA Organic verified cotton. This can largely be traced back to the absence of synthetic pesticides, artificial fertilisers, and artificial irrigation. Consequently, CmiA Organic cotton can help the textile industry meet regulatory requirements as well as science-based targets. The results also show that the consequences of climate change threaten the livelihoods of these cotton farmers, even though the type of agriculture they practise barely contributes to climate change.

Materials made from domestic, renewable raw materials reduce CO₂ emissions, prevent microplastics from entering the environment, and close the material cycle. The German Institutes for Textile and Fiber Research Denkendorf (DITF) are developing nature-based alternatives to synthetically produced and predominantly petroleum-based materials.
