Textile means more than just a piece of clothing today, it has always been closely related to our daily life. Since more consumers are eager to buy unique, creative and functional clothing, innovative technologies are being adopted in a broad range of applications in the textile and fashion market. Fashion and technology are edging closer together to cater effectively for the needs of the consumers.

According to the International Data Corporation (IDC), the shipping of wearable technology is expected to increase by almost five times from 2017 to 2021 (from 210 million pieces to 1,150 million pieces). A wide variety of fashion technology products are available in the market, for example, there are colour-changing sportswear based on body temperature, baby clothes with wearable sensors for monitoring respiratory, temperature and human activity, apparel inventory management system, textile recycling technology and products recommendation engine, etc.

Textile production can be organized sustainably by utilizing short supply chains and preventing overproduction. This can already be achieved today by intelligently connecting and efficiently utilizing existing infrastructure. At the same time, production becomes circular when innovative technologies and materials are used that enable high-quality recycling. The ALADIN research project, launched in May 2026 and co-funded with five million euros under the EU Horizon Europe program, is creating the conditions for this.
