Toray develops Polyester-Nylon fiber containing at least 93% recycled material by mass

Toray Industries, Inc., announced today that it has developed a polyester-nylon fiber with at least 93% recycled content by mass, based on the total weight of the raw yarn. This percentage applies to the newly developed raw yarn and does not represent the recycled content of the finished fabric or garment.

This breakthrough draws on technologies that the company cultivated through its &+™ (and plus) recycled fiber brand. Both the polyester and nylon components of the fiber incorporate recycled raw materials.

Composite fibers can provide added functionality, sophisticated textures, and subtle visual effects. But combining different polymers makes it difficult to use high proportions of recycled raw materials while maintaining consistent quality. Toray tapped its extensive expertise in polymer design and composite spinning to overcome this challenge and achieve containing at least 93% recycled material by mass of the total raw-yarn weight. The company will verify the technology’s viability for mass production and continue research to increase recycled-material content in composite fibers.

The fashion industry is showing increasing interest in materials containing recycled content.

Materials for high-end and luxury applications must also deliver exceptional aesthetic qualities, including appearance, tailoring and drape, texture, and durability.

These considerations prompted Toray to create ARTIROSA® CX, which incorporates the newly developed fiber. The recycled-material content of each ARTIROSA CX fabric may vary depending on its composition. It combines Toray’s longstanding expertise in composite spinning with the weaving, knitting, dyeing, and finishing know-how of Japan’s textile-producing regions. It thereby delivers both exceptional aesthetic appeal and high functionality.

ARTIROSA CX features a dense, finely textured surface and a crisp, sophisticated feel. Fabric design and finishing can also impart such practical properties as waterproofing, durable water repellency, and wind resistance. Rather than emphasizing the distinctive appearance typical of conventional functional materials, ARTIROSA CX refines that look into an elegant, sophisticated texture. The result is a cleaner, more contemporary urban aesthetic.

Toray will market ARTIROSA CX for wide-ranging applications, including men’s and women’s outerwear, urban outdoor wear, and premium casual wear. Through nylon blends, combinations with natural fibers, and post-processing techniques, the company will continue developing sophisticated textiles that draw on Japan’s craftsmanship traditions.

ARTIROSA CX Details

1. Features: ARTIROSA CX incorporates the newly developed polyester-nylon composite fiber, in which recycled material accounts for at least 93% by mass of the total raw-yarn weight. This percentage does not represent the recycled content of the finished ARTIROSA CX fabric or garment.

Does not intentionally use substances classified as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in water-repellent agents, while enabling excellent water repellency and durable water repellency depending on material, design, and processing.

Dense, fine-textured surface and crisp, sophisticated feel.

Combines aesthetic appeal with practical performance for applications including men’s and women’s outerwear and outdoor wear.

2. Technical overview: Toray applied proprietary polymer design and composite spinning technologies to incorporate recycled raw materials into polyester and nylon components of composite fiber. Recycled material accounts for at least 93% of the total weight of the newly developed raw yarn. The percentage does not represent the recycled content of the finished fabric or garment.

Combined these technologies with expertise in high-density fabric design, dyeing, post-processing, and finishing from Japan’s textile-producing regions to achieve distinctive texture and functionality.

Material selection, fabric design, and post-processing can be tailored to provide such functions as waterproofing, durable water repellency, and wind resistance.

3. Launch slated for fall/winter 2027.

4. Targeting initial year sales of 200,000 meters, for men’s and women’s outerwear, urban outdoor and premium casual wear, and other applications.
