Cotton Review: An Overview of the 2023/24 season and global, country projections for 2024/25

The current edition of "Cotton: Review of the World Situation" takes readers on an extremely thorough overview of the cotton market for the 2023/24 season. The author — ICAC Data Scientist Dr Matthew Looney — provides detailed analysis of production, consumption, and trade at both the global and regional levels.

The markets are notoriously fickle and can be affected by what might seem to be unrelated issues, which Dr Looney addresses:

  • Climate change and weather abnormalities,
  • Pest infestations and increasing resistance,
  • Genetics and breeding,
  • Environmental regulations,
  • Technological advancements, and
  • Fashion trends.

As we prepare to turn the calendar on 2025, world cotton lint production currently is estimated to be about 25.4 million tonnes — roughly the same as the last season — surpassing the world cotton lint consumption by 392,000 tonnes.
