Sudan rejoins the ICAC, becomes 29th member overall and the 12th member in Africa

The International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) is pleased to announce that Sudan has rejoined the organisation, becoming its 29th Member and 12th Member in Africa.

While the ICAC is always thrilled to welcome back former Members, the reunion with Sudan is an especially happy moment because the North African nation was one of the original countries that joined the ICAC when it was first formed back in 1939.

The country's cotton industry made great strides between the 2018/19 season and the 2019/20 season. Although the planted area remained unchanged at 180,000 hectares (ha), yields jumped nearly 25%, from 578 kg/ha to 722 kg/ha. The result was overall production increasing from 104,000 tonnes to 130,000 tonnes in a single year.

 


‘We have been working tirelessly with Sudan to enable them to rejoin the ICAC and after one year of continuous effort by all parties we have achieved it’, said Kai Hughes, ICAC Executive Director. 'I am grateful to everyone who made it happen and we are delighted to be once again in a position where we can help and advise their cotton and textile industry. The ICAC has developed a number of innovative projects over the last few years that would greatly benefit Sudan and we look forward to working with them again'.

Global cotton production projected to outpace consumption, but risks remain

Global cotton production is projected to reach 26.2 million tonnes in the 2026/27 season, marginally outpacing estimated consumption of 25.9 million tonnes.
