“Composites for a Sustainable World” – under this theme the JEC World, the largest trade fair for composite materials and their applications, will again be held in Paris from May 03 to 05, 2022, where SGL Carbon will also be represented. According to the motto of the SGL booth “HELLO Great to see you again!”, in hall 6, booth D43, the two Business Units Carbon Fibers and Composite Solutions will present a wide product range of innovative carbon and glass fiber materials as well as tailor-made composite parts for various industrial applications.

At a glance:

• Carbon fiber stacks for automotive lightweight construction

• Impregnated materials based on glass and carbon fiber

• Composite battery cases for electric vehicles

“After two years of abstinence from fairs, we are happy to be back at this great event, to welcome our customers and business partners personally in Paris and to thank them for their loyalty over the past years”, according to Stefan Geh, Head of Business Unit Composite Solutions at SGL Carbon.

In line with the motto of the trade fair, SGL has already been developing sustainable solutions for many years, of which visitors can get an idea at the booth. For example, the company is focusing on further automation of technologies for its carbon fiber stacks for lightweight construction, while at the same time conserving resources by generating less material waste during production. In addition, composite materials with carbon and glass fibers also show off their advantages in aerospace and electromobility. The lighter weight in composite battery cases for electric cars saves energy and thus ensures greater range and efficiency.

“SGL represents a reliable and innovative partner for carbon fibers and composite solutions for its customers. We offer first-class and tailor-made products that are becoming indispensable for our industrial partners, especially today in the key tasks of sustainability and resource efficiency”, explains Roland Nowicki, Head of Business Unit Carbon Fibers at SGL Carbon.

Carbon fiber stacks for automotive lightweight construction

At this year’s JEC World, SGL will present the so-called stacks, precisely tailored and customer-specifically assembled packages of carbon fiber layers. The experts at SGL Carbon are working closely with their customers to make component production with the material carbon particularly efficient and to integrate it optimally into existing customer processes.

As a long-standing partner, SGL Carbon has been producing carbon fibers, semi-finished products, and stacks for the automotive industry for over 10 years. The material systems and production technologies have a high degree of automation and are designed so that all components can be manufactured in large series. Typical industry requirements, e.g. from the automotive or wind industry, can be taken into account. Thanks to the automated manufacturing process, the stacks feature a high level of quality. In addition, resources are conserved during production. As a waste-optimized stack is already generated during development, less material waste is produced than when using conventional textiles.

The materials are used, among other things, in the side frames of the new BMW iX models. Convince yourself from May 03 to 05 at the SGL booth.

Impregnated materials based on glass and carbon fiber

As another application example for SGL's prepreg materials, the company is demonstrating a helicopter seat reinforced with impregnated glass fiber textiles. To this end, SGL Carbon supplies Safran Seats with various glass and carbon fiber prepregs. SGL developed and qualified this material individually according to the customer's specification. The prepregs are characterized by good drapability and also meet the stringent requirements for flame retardancy.

Composite battery cases for electric vehicles

Electromobility is seen as the solution for sustainable mobility. Batteries play a crucial role here. As a result, battery boxes made of glass-fiber and carbon-fiber composite materials are also gaining importance. SGL Carbon’s high-voltage battery housing concept represents a reduction in weight of up to 50 percent compared with the corresponding steel component. It meets the highest of standards in terms of fire resistance, rigidity, acoustics and both thermal and electromagnetic shielding. With fiber composites, sensors can also be integrated to detect damage in the underbody of the electric vehicle.

Using carbon-fiber non-woven materials and fiber-reinforced thermosetting polymers helps to map complex geometries with a process streamlined and resource-efficient for serial production.

Our experts look forward to the exchange with you. Talk to us in Hall 6, Booth D43.

SGL Carbon with solid business performance

Despite the increasingly difficult economic environment, SGL Carbon was able to increase sales in H1 2023 from €549.8 million in the previous year to €560.5 million. Adjusted EBITDA (EBITDApre) remained almost unchanged at €88.0 million (H1 2022: €87.9 million). The expected good business performance of the Graphite Solutions business unit and the better-than-expected sales and earnings development of Process Technology and Composite Solutions compensated the drop in demand in Carbon Fibers.
