Collegium Musicum of RWTH Aachen is ENUO Orchestra of the Month

The European Network of University Orchestras (ENUO) has presented the Collegium Musicum of RWTH Aachen University as Orchestra of the Month in June 2021.

The Collegium Musicum is the official music ensemble of RWTH Aachen University. It consists of an orchestra and a choir made up of students, staff and teachers from the entire Aachen student body. The orchestra currently has 60 members.

As a rule, rehearsals take place once a week in one of the large RWTH lecture halls. Two concerts take place towards the end of each lecture period, and every second semester a joint work by choir and orchestra. In addition, the Collegium Musicum performs at industry and university events as well as at cultural events in Germany and abroad.

Great works such as Carl Orff's Carmina Burana and Verdi's Requiem require not only dedicated musicians but also good organisation and direction. The main organisation is done by the student members. Tobias Haussig is the musical director, and Professor Thomas Gries, the head of the Institut für Textiltechnik, is the academic director of the Collegium Musicum.

For some years now, the Collegium Musicum has included the RWTH's own Carbon Quintet, made up of members of the orchestra, which plays music on instruments made of carbon fibres and thus impressively represents a combination of music and science.

In addition to making music together, the social interaction in the orchestra creates a great strengthening of cohesion and thus contributes to the great success of the Collegium Musicum.

25 years of medical devices: ITVP combines experience with innovation

ITV Denkendorf Produktservice GmbH (ITVP) is celebrating its 25th anniversary. On October 1, 2001, ITVP was founded as a subsidiary of the German Institutes of Textile and Fiber Research Denkendorf (DITF), Europe’s largest textile research center. This spin-off company made it possible to consolidate expertise in medical technology and significantly expand production, which had previously been initiated mostly in the DITF’s cleanrooms.

An eco-friendly alternative to fluorocarbon treatments

Protective and outdoor clothing derives its durable water-, dirt- and oil- repellent properties from the application of fluorinated polymers or per- and polyfluorinated low-molecular- weight chemicals (PFCs). The beneficial properties thus achieved on textiles are offset by environmental and human health risks. For manufacturers of sports, medical, protective and automotive textiles, researchers at the Sächsisches Textilforschungsinstitut e.V. and the Leibniz Institute for Polymer Research have developed liquid-applied dispersions and solutions to functionalise textiles without the use of fluorine.

180 years of TESTEX: From Zurich silk testing to global certification

For 180 years, TESTEX has developed alongside the textile industry while maintaining the same underlying purpose: creating trust through independent and reliable measurement. Founded in Zurich in 1846 as the Zurich Silk Conditioning Institute, TESTEX has grown from a local institution serving the silk trade into an international Swiss testing and certification institute for textiles and leather.

Mayer & Cie. Global gears up tor ITMA Asia 2026

Mayer & Cie. Global will focus on mattress fabric production at ITMA Asia, taking place in Shanghai from 20 to 24 November 2026. The company will showcase one of its flagship models for this application: the OVJA 2.4 EM. Joining the mattress fabric specialist will be an OV 3.2 QCe, presented at ITMA Asia in a configuration for knitting double-face fabrics in E40. This gives the OV 3.2 QCe a combination of capabilities rarely found in the market. The German textile machinery manufacturer will also introduce its new portfolio strategy and share updates from its development team at its Albstadt headquarters.

FET highlights advances in fibre spinning technology at Dornbirn Global Fiber Congress

Fibre Extrusion Technology Limited (FET) presented its latest developments in fibre spinning technology at the Dornbirn Global Fiber Congress in Austria in September 2026. In a presentation entitled “Spinning a good yarn”, Dr Jonny Hunter examined recent technological developments and challenges facing the fibre industry, highlighting the company's expanding range of specialised fibre extrusion and spinning systems.
