Form is not a factor - AATCC Gray Scale update

The AATCC Gray Scales for Color Change and Gray Scales for Staining have a new base and sleeves. The color chips, size and functionality remain the same. The base and sleeves went from paper to plastic. This change provides a more durable and consistent feel when handling. The change from paper to plastic allows the scales to handle the rigors of laboratory life better than its predecessor. Scales should be replaced as directed by AATCC EP1 and AATCC EP2.

This change will be a flow-in. As the inventory of the current scales are depleted, AATCC will transition to the newer version. AATCC cannot accommodate product requests but rest assured that the performance and functionality remain unchanged regardless of the version you receive.

Dashes & Dots

AATCC is in the process of transitioning from Dashes to Dots. Some AATCC Gray Scales may have half steps expressed in dashes (-), while others have dots (.) Either is acceptable and usability is comparable. AATCC cannot grant requests for one version over the other. Once all inventory of Dashes are depleted AAATCC will fully convert to Dots. For mathematical calculation, a decimal representation works with most applications. If you have a dash scale simply convert to decimal when inputting details into a mathematical based application.

AATCC announces 2025 Herman & Myrtle Goldstein Graduate Student Paper Competition winners

The American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC) recognized the winners of the 2025 Herman & Myrtle Goldstein Graduate Student Paper Competition. Founded in 1982 to give student members the chance to conduct and present original research, the competition was renamed in 1994 in honor of Herman and Myrtle Goldstein, following their US$60,000 endowment. Their gift is a lasting remembrance of their dedication to young people in the textile industry.

New funding available for textile research

The AATCC Foundation Student Research Support Grant Program provides financial assistance for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing textile-related projects. Students may submit proposals now for funding to be awarded January 2026. Applications must be submitted by October 1, 2025, to be considered.

Data and skills, not algorithms, hold back AI adoption in textiles, finds ITMF and ITA white paper

The International Textile Manufacturers Federation (ITMF) and the Institut für Textiltechnik of RWTH Aachen University (ITA) have published a new white paper entitled AI in the Textile Value Chain: A Strategic Guide to Artificial Intelligence for the Global Textile Industry. The study concludes that the main barriers to artificial intelligence adoption in the textile and apparel industry are not technological limitations, but poor data integration, skills shortages and gaps in governance. According to the authors, further progress will depend on coordinated efforts to develop capabilities across the industry.

Brazil: The Italian textile and textile-machinery sector takes centre stage at two workshops

From 19 to 24 October 2026, Brazil will host a mission showcasing Italian excellence in the textile and textile machinery sectors, with two workshops scheduled for 20 October in the state of Santa Catarina and 22 October in São Paulo. The initiative will bring together Italian companies specialising in textile machinery, yarns, fabrics and clothing accessories, with the aim of strengthening commercial and industrial ties between the two countries and opening up new opportunities for collaboration.

Aachen Summer School: Textiles become smart through 3D printing and origami

From 21 to 29 September 2026, the Aachen Summer School will transform Institut für Textiltechnik (ITA) of RWTH Aachen University into a laboratory of the future: over the course of a week, students will use origami folding techniques and 3D printing to develop active textile structures capable of performing programmable movements. This interdisciplinary event combines theoretical foundations with practical prototyping – from digital modelling right through to functional textile prototypes.

Trützschler to showcase innovations in spinning preparation and nonwovens at ITMA Asia 2026

From November 20 to 24, 2026, the Trützschler Group will present its latest fiber processing technologies at ITMA Asia in Shanghai, China.
